Global Defence Alliance

World Freedom Federation

Introduction

Ahh Commander, glad you could make it. As you have no doubt heard, the troubles in the neutral zone have escalated somewhat in the past few weeks. After long negotiations and futile talks the President has ordered the go ahead on Operation Konflict. In other words it's time for the GDA (Global Defence Alliance) to put an end to the WFF's  reign of terror and regain some level of peace in the region. The WFF (World Freedom Federation) have been extracting oil illegally from the neutral zone for the past while, killing all who enter their recently acquired territory. I've been busy assembling our forces for the imminent action and it turns out you are the most qualified man to lead our initial forces into the region. You will leave immediately for the front lines where you will receive further orders. I wish you good luck commander. And remember... We need to keep casualties on our side to a minimum.

A look at the interface

Pressing the home button will center the view on your command centre. You can repair structures by selecting the repair icon and left clicking on a damaged structure. This will cost you 100 credits and repair the structure by 100 hit points. To demolish a structure select the demolish icon and left click on a structure. When you demolish a structure you get a percentage of it's original cost back. To exit repair/demolish mode right click. Structures can be bought and placed using the structure build panel. If you try to build too far away from an existing structure you'll hear a warning sound. You will also hear this warning sound if try to build something that you don't have enough credits or power for. Use the buttons at the bottom of the interface to scroll through the various units/structures. If an icon is shaded out it means it is not available to build yet. For example you need to build a barracks to make soldiers available and you need to build factory to make the repairbay available. Up the top left of the screen is the power meter. If this goes in the red certain structures will not function. Keep your power level up by building more power stations. Just above the power meter is the amount of credits you have available to spend. The more oil refineries you have the quicker your income will be. Up the top right of the screen is the time of day indicator, below that are the low power and unit limit indicators. The low power indicator lights up when power levels are critical and the unit limit indicator lights up when you have reached the max amount of units you can build. Also note the selection brackets around the two men. These brackets show what units you have selected and change colour to represent the units health.

Controls

To move selected units around the map right click, the cursor will change color to green to indicate moving. To make units target an enemy unit or structure right click on the enemy unit/structure, the cursor will change color to red to indicate the unit has been targeted. Structures

Structure Name

Description

Command Centre 2000cr The Command Centre is the heart of your base. Without one you can't build any other structures. If you lose it in battle don't worry too much though, another one can be built as long as you have the credits and another existing structure to place it near.
Power Station 750cr Your base needs power to run. Some buildings drain more power than others so you should have a few power stations to keep your power levels in the green. If your power is low some buildings may cease to function.
Barracks 500cr This is where your newly trained recruits come from. The barracks has only a small drain on power but you will need power to use it.
Factory 2000cr Any ground vehicles you request will be manufactured here. This building needs power to manufacture vehicles.
Oil Refinery 2000cr Drill for oil to get credits, to buy structures, to buy units, to kill your enemies. Oil refineries can drill under low power however their efficiency will be halved.
Comm Centre 1500cr Building a communications centre will allow you to call in air strikes and build a helipad for gunships. When power is low you will not be able to call an air strike.
Light 200cr Lights can be placed around your base. Their only purpose is to iluminate your base. Each light uses a small amount power but will switch to there back up battery when power levels are low.
Repairbay 1000cr Drive damaged  vehicles up to a repairbay to repair them. Keeping experienced units alive is very beneficial. The repairbay needs power to work.
Helipad 1500cr You need a helipad to build helicopters. The helipad requires power to work.
Guard Tower 500cr Place guard towers around your bases perimeter for defence against lightly armoured units. Guard Towers do not need or use power.
Bunker 700cr Place bunkers around your base for protection against heavier armoured units. Bunkers will not function under low power.
Sam Site 700cr The best in anti-aircraft defences. Very effective in destroying helicopters. Sam sites will not function under low power.

Units

Description

Soldier 100cr Soldiers are cheap but they do little damage and are quite weak. Do not underestimate them though. When they're in groups they can be quite effective.
Medic 250cr Medics are very useful indeed. Put one of these guys with a group of men and he'll keep your squad fighting longer. He's armed with a machine gun like the standard soldiers but try to keep him behind the squad so he doesn't get injured. He can't heal himself. If you put a medic in a vehicle he'll heal other units in the vehicle with him.
RPG Soldier 250cr If you need some vehicles or buildings destroyed and you can't afford tanks then the rpg soldier is your man. Not quite as powerful as a tank these guys still pack a punch.
Hummvee 500cr Hummers are the fastest ground unit available to you. They carry a machine gun which is slightly more powerful than the soldiers piece and they also have the capacity to carry up to 3 men.
Tank 800cr Tanks are the brutes of the battlefield. They're slow but they pack some serious fire power and they're well armoured. Tank commanders find it easier to target other vehicles or packs of troops rather than single men. They are also very effective in levelling buildings.
APC 650cr You can ferry up to 8 men around in an apc. It's armed with a cannon for protection but it's not too powerful. It's well armoured though making it ideal for transporting troops safely accross the battle field.
Scud Launcher 1200cr Scud Launcers are very effective at destroying buildings. They aren't well armoured however so make sure they're escorted by some support units. It's also important to remember that they can't attack troops, only buildings and vehicles. Scud Launchers do not not auto target, due to their long reload time they wait for direct orders before attacking anything.
Anti Aircraft Tank 750cr Mobile defence against helicopters. These tanks aquire their targets automatically when there's an enemy helicopter in range.
Helicopter Gunship 900cr An extremely dangerous unit, only aa units can take on gunships.
Attack Jet 750cr Jets can be called in to perform an air strike on an enemy target. When assigning a target for an air strike try to pick a stationary target as the jets take a short time to arrive at the target coordinates and if the target has moved the strike may be ineffective. Jets cannot be controlled directly.

Gameplay Tips

Multiplayer

Dark Konflict can be played by two players over a lan or on the internet. To set up an internet game the host must enter their ip address on the multiplayer menu and then click on "Host TCP/IP Game". The host should also notify the other person of the ip address as the joining player will need to enter the hosts ip address before clicking on "Join TCP/IP Game". If you are unsure of your ip address run "winipcfg" from the windows start menu. This will bring up a dialogue box with your ip address displayed. Or in Windows XP you can get your ip address from the properties of your dial up connection while your online. Also bear in mind each time you log on to the internet you may be assigned a new ip address. A 56k modem or faster connection is required to play the internet game.

To set up a lan game you can use the same method as that of the internet game if you have tcp/ip set up on your lan. To find each computers ip address right click on network neighborhood and go into properties. Select the tcp/ip protocol assigned to the network card from the list and click properties. You should now see the ip address. In Windows XP check the properties dialogue box of your lan connection. Alternatively if you have the ipx protocol installed you can avoid the hassles of ip addresses and select "IPX Lan Game" from the multiplayer menu.

Please note you cannot change between protocols in the game without restarting the program. For example if you select ipx you cannot return to the multiplayer menu and change to tcp/ip. If you are having difficulty getting a connection both players should exit the game and restart it. The fastest computer should be the host.

Troubleshooting

Before running the game it is advisable not to have any other programs running in the background for optimal performance. Running the game in the default resolution of 640x480 is also recommended. To increase performance you can also change the maximum unit limit in the options menu to a lower number. To reset the game to default settings you can delete the "dkconfig.cfg" file. The game will automatically create a new one with default settings however any progress in the campaign missions will also be reset.

Minimum specs: PII400, 64mb ram, a 3d graphics card and Direct X 7 or higher.
